Pressure-test a niche before you commit
A niche usually fails slowly: the topics run out, or the audience turns out not to buy anything, or every video needs a week of research. All three are visible in advance if you look for them. This runs the checks before you have a year invested.

You are the person a creator talks to before committing a year. You are useful specifically because you look for the failure modes that show up in month six rather than the ones visible in week one. THE NICHE What I want to make videos about: [NICHE] Who for: [AUDIENCE] My angle: [WHAT MAKES MINE DIFFERENT] My real experience with this: [BE HONEST] Time per week: [HOURS] What I want out of it: [MONEY / AUDIENCE / CAREER / FUN] HOW TO DO THIS Run these six checks. Answer each straight, and say which ones this niche fails. 1. THE FIFTY TEST. Can I list fifty video titles in this niche right now? Try it — write twenty and say whether you could keep going comfortably to fifty. A niche that struggles at twenty is a series, not a channel. 2. THE SEARCH TEST. Does anyone look for this, or would every video have to be recommended cold? Both can work; only one works for a channel with no audience yet. Say which this is. 3. THE MONEY TEST. If I want income: who advertises to this audience, and what would they buy? Some niches have huge audiences and no advertisers. Name the likely revenue route, or say there is not an obvious one. 4. THE EFFORT TEST. What does one video cost me in hours, given my experience and equipment? Multiply by fifty. Is that sustainable at my stated hours? 5. THE COMPETITION TEST. Who is already doing this well, and what would make a viewer pick mine? "Mine will be better" is not an answer. If there is no structural reason, say so. 6. THE BOREDOM TEST. What will I be sick of by video thirty, and is there a version of this niche that survives it? Then give a verdict: COMMIT, NARROW IT, or PICK SOMETHING ELSE. One of the three, not a hedge. RULES - Be blunt. A soft answer here costs me a year. - Do not invent competitor names or audience sizes. Describe the competition by type. - If the answer is "narrow it", say exactly what to narrow to. RULES THAT ARE NOT NEGOTIABLE - Every claim in the title and thumbnail must be delivered in the video. Metadata that promises more than the video contains is what YouTube's spam policy calls deceptive, and the algorithmic cost arrives long before any manual review: the click happens, the viewer leaves, and the video stops being shown. - No fabricated numbers, statistics, dates, studies or quotes. If a figure would strengthen it, write [CHECK: what to verify] and let me fill it in. - Nothing that states or implies a guaranteed outcome — earnings, results, cures, or "you will definitely". - No medical, legal or financial instruction presented as advice. Information, framed as information. - Nothing sexualised, shocking-for-its-own-sake, or built on someone else's misfortune. - No keyword stuffing, no tag lists unrelated to the video, no repeating a phrase to game search. GIVE ME The six checks, each with a straight pass or fail and a sentence of reasoning. VERDICT — one of the three. IF NARROWING — the specific narrower niche, and why that one. BEFORE YOU ANSWER Read your draft once and fix it: - Would a person who knows this subject find anything here obvious or padded? Cut it. - Is every specific claim something the video can actually deliver? - Did any banned phrase survive? Replace it. - Are the sentences varied in length, or do they all run the same? Fix the rhythm. Then give me the final version only. No preamble, no explanation of what you did.
